What Is Ovulation?

Ovulation is the release of a mature egg from one of your ovaries, usually around the middle of your menstrual cycle. After release, the egg travels down the fallopian tube where it can be fertilized by sperm for 12 to 24 hours. If fertilization does not occur, the egg disintegrates and your period begins about 14 days later.

Knowing when you ovulate is the single most important factor in natural conception planning. The 5 days before ovulation plus the day of ovulation itself make up your fertile window — the only days each cycle when intercourse can result in pregnancy.

How Our Ovulation Calculator Works

The calculator uses the standard calendar (rhythm) method:

  1. Ovulation day = LMP (first day of last period) + (cycle length − 14)
  2. Fertile window = ovulation day − 5 days through ovulation day + 1 day

For a 28-day cycle starting on January 1: ovulation is around January 15, and the fertile window runs from January 10 to January 16. This method is accurate for women with regular cycles but becomes less reliable with irregular cycles.

Signs and Symptoms of Ovulation

Beyond the calendar, your body gives physical clues that ovulation is approaching or happening:

Combining calendar prediction with ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) that detect the LH surge gives the most accurate timing.

Tips for Getting Pregnant Faster

Ovulation by Cycle Length

Your ovulation day shifts based on your cycle length. The rule ovulation = cycle length − 14 holds true across the normal range:

Cycles outside the 21–35 day range may indicate hormonal imbalance and warrant medical review.

Frequently Asked Questions

When do I ovulate?
For a typical 28-day cycle, ovulation occurs around day 14 (counting from the first day of your last period). In general, ovulation happens about 14 days before your next period. So for a 32-day cycle, ovulation is around day 18.
How long does the fertile window last?
The fertile window is about 6 days: the 5 days before ovulation plus the day of ovulation. Sperm can survive up to 5 days in the female reproductive tract, while the egg lives 12-24 hours after release.
Can the ovulation calculator be used for birth control?
No. The calendar method alone has a high typical-use failure rate (~24% per year). This tool is for awareness and conception planning, not contraception. For birth control use a medically validated method and consult a healthcare provider.
Can I get pregnant right after my period?
Yes, especially with short cycles (21-24 days) or long periods. Sperm can live up to 5 days, so intercourse at the end of a period can overlap with early ovulation. Always use contraception if avoiding pregnancy.
What if I have irregular cycles?
Calendar-based ovulation prediction is unreliable with irregular cycles. Use ovulation predictor kits (OPKs), track cervical mucus and basal body temperature, and consult a healthcare provider if cycles vary by more than 7-9 days.
