What Is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple screening tool that uses your height and weight to estimate body fatness. It is widely used by the World Health Organization (WHO), doctors and researchers to flag weight categories that may lead to health problems.
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)²
For example, a woman who is 160 cm tall and weighs 55 kg has a BMI of 55 / (1.60)² = 21.5, which falls in the normal range.
BMI Classification (WHO + Asian cutoffs)
The WHO sets international BMI cutoffs, but for Asian populations (who face higher disease risk at lower BMI), many countries including China use stricter thresholds:
| Category | WHO (International) | Asian (China/WPRO) |
| Underweight | < 18.5 | < 18.5 |
| Normal | 18.5 – 24.9 | 18.5 – 23.9 |
| Overweight | 25.0 – 29.9 | 24.0 – 27.9 |
| Obese | ≥ 30.0 | ≥ 28.0 |
Our calculator uses the Asian cutoffs (18.5–24 normal, 24–28 overweight, 28+ obese) as they better reflect health risk for Chinese and other Asian women.
Why BMI Matters for Women's Health
- Fertility — both low BMI (<18.5) and high BMI (>28) can disrupt ovulation and reduce fertility
- Pregnancy outcomes — obesity increases risk of gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and cesarean delivery
- Menstrual regularity — extreme low or high BMI commonly causes cycle irregularity
- PCOS — overweight worsens PCOS symptoms and insulin resistance
- Cardiovascular disease — high BMI correlates with hypertension, dyslipidemia, type 2 diabetes
- Bone health — being underweight increases osteoporosis and fracture risk
Limitations of BMI
BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnostic one. It does not directly measure body fat and has known limitations:
- Athletes with high muscle mass may be classified as "overweight" despite low body fat
- Older adults may have normal BMI but high body fat due to muscle loss (sarcopenia)
- Pregnant and breastfeeding women — BMI is not applicable; use pre-pregnancy BMI only
- Children and teens — use BMI percentile for age, not adult cutoffs
- BMI does not account for fat distribution — abdominal fat is riskier than hip/thigh fat
For a fuller picture, pair BMI with waist circumference (women: < 80 cm for Asians, < 88 cm for Westerners) and body composition measurements.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a healthy BMI for women?
For Asian populations, a healthy BMI is 18.5-24 (WHO Asian cutoffs). For Western populations the WHO cutoff is 18.5-24.9. Below 18.5 is underweight, 24-28 overweight, 28+ obese for Asians.
Is BMI accurate for everyone?
No. BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat. It may overestimate body fat in muscular athletes and underestimate it in older adults with reduced muscle mass. BMI is also not applicable to pregnant or breastfeeding women.
What is the BMI formula?
BMI = weight in kilograms / (height in meters)^2. For example, 55 kg / (1.60 m)^2 = 21.5.
What BMI is needed for fertility?
A BMI between 18.5 and 24 is optimal for fertility. BMI below 18.5 or above 28 can disrupt ovulation and reduce the chance of natural conception and IVF success.
How can I lower my BMI safely?
Combine a balanced, calorie-appropriate diet with regular physical activity (150+ minutes of moderate exercise per week). Aim for 0.5-1 kg/week loss. Consult a healthcare provider or dietitian, especially if you have medical conditions.
